Hola, Sustainable OKC!
I hope you all had a pleasant weekend and enjoyed the rain. Here at
Sustainable OKC we're ready to kick off our fall activities and we need
you! We're starting out with two Action Groups to organize the projects
people are most interested in. Both groups will have introductory
planning meetings on Monday, September 12, at the Downtown Library's Jim
Thorpe Room. Drop us a line if you have any questions. Hope to see you
there!
Urban Development
* Panel Discussion: We're organizing a panel discussion on the
potential for Oklahoma City to incorporate sustainable design in its
urban redevelopment. This will be in October.
* Building codes: Another project we're excited about is
researching ways to update the building codes in Oklahoma City. There's
potential to include the newest developments in conservation of energy
and resources, as well as the use of renewable and reclaimed materials.
Other cities, such as Boston, have updated their building codes to
streamline the building process for environmentally friendly
developments. Interested? This is a big project and we'll need lots of
help.
* First meeting: Monday, September 12, 8:00 p.m. at the Downtown
Library, Jim Thorpe Room (#2102). Please drop us a line so we'll know
how many to expect. Email Jennifer at sustainableokc at yahoo.com.
Food/Agriculture
* Community Garden: Sustainable OKC is working in collaboration
with the Village Library to develop a community garden on the library
grounds. Like other community gardens, the development of the Village
Library garden requires neighborhood mobilization and capacity building,
along with digging and weeding. We're in the early stages on this one,
waiting to hear back on a grant application. To get involved in this
one from the beginning, contact Lisa at sustainableokc at yahoo.com
<mailto:sustainableokc at yahoo.com> . First meeting: August Monday,
September 12, 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Library, Jim Thorpe Room
(#2102).
* Food Bank Volunteer Project: The members of Sustainable OKC
volunteer in the organic gardens at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
<http://www.regionalfoodbank.org/> . The work is enjoyable and we
always have a lot of fun! Our next volunteer date will be Monday,
August 29, at 5:30 p.m. or as soon as you can get there after work. We
usually gather in the gardens behind (west of) the Food Bank.
Directions are on the website at www.regionalfoodbank.org. Please let
us know if you're interested so we'll know how many to expect; email
Laura at sustainableokc at yahoo.com <mailto:sustainableokc at yahoo.com> .
That's it for now-have a great day!
Best wishes,
Jennifer Gooden
