Welcome to Urban Development Info!

 

On Monday, September 12th we had the first meeting of the Urban Development Action Group. * 

 

The group met at 8:00 p.m. and started with a brief round of introductions and an overview of Sustainable OKC by Jennifer G. and Laura B.  After that the group jumped into discussions of the upcoming panel discussion.

 

Panel Discussion – The purpose of the panel discussion, coinciding with our mission statement, is to create awareness and educate not only Sustainable OKC members but also the interested public about various types of sustainable development and opportunities that exist in the OKC area.  The panel discussion is taking place on October 20th in the basement of the Chapel at OCU.  Current speakers on the panel include Hans Butzer(architect), Russell Claus(City Planner), and Kelly Parker(Consultant).  The group discussed who the additional speakers could be and what the focus of the discussion will be.  The focus will most likely involve one or two areas currently under development in the Oklahoma City area and will include discussion on what the sustainable development opportunities are for those areas.  Discussion could include topics such as brownfields, transportation, pedestrian activity, green space, energy efficiency, and others.  If you have comments or suggestions about panel

Smart City Initiatives – The other topic discussed by the group was smart city initiatives.  Several people gave examples such as Chicago’s urban heat and green roofs, Austin’s building codes, and Philadelphia’s water runoff program.  The group had a lively debate about what options might exist in Oklahoma City and various members of the group are going to do further research on what other cities are doing and what initiatives we might be able to focus on in the next five-thirty years in OKC.

* The action groups are set up to make it easy for people to work on activities they are most interested in.  Each group will have several projects they are working on, and each group will be able to pick their projects and determine what role each person wants to play in the projects.
