Green Drinks in June was a wonderful event full of new friends, great ideas, and lots of networking. Thanks to Susie Shields and Mark Derschweiler for opening their home and hosting the event.

  GARDEN GROUP UPDATE:

  Village Community Garden:
The main focus of the Food/Agriculture group was to come up with a plan for the Village Community Garden now that the physical garden exists. (If you get a chance to drive by there is both a regular rectangular community garden and a butterfly garden located on the Village Library property at 10307 N. Pennsylvania.) At the meeting two people from the Village were selected to be primary leaders of the project. A leadership committee was formed which consists of the two primary leaders as well as a liaison to the Village Library, a liaison to Sustainable OKC, and a liaison to the Regional Food Bank. Additional members will be added to this committee as needed.

The leadership committee will work together to recruit additional groups interested in having garden plots, do fundraising and donation solicitation, ensure that the daily maintenance of the garden is completed, plan for the future success of the garden, and organize various events that will be fun and educational for community members. Fun events brainstormed by the group include a singles work night, senior citizens day, cooking classes, picnics, a garden dance, kids book programs, kids play day, and more. In the near future an arbor will be built and various picnic and park benches may be added to the area. If you are interested in donating a reading bench, money, time, or materials to the garden please contact villagecommunitygarden at yahoo.com.

***Stay tuned for information about the upcoming grand opening ceremony which will be the official community opening of the garden.

  Future Ideas:
  - A book discussion group where books such as “The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals” would be read and discussed.
  - A workshop or speaker series on the importance of organic food and the positive impact it can have on humans.
  - An agricultural speaker who would talk about the importance of local farms, the politics and big agriculture, and agriculture in the global market.

If you are interested in joining a book discussion group with a Food/Agriculture focus or have any feedback about our future ideas or the Village Community Garden please contact me at sunnylaurarenee at yahoo.com.

Thanks to all those who participated in our great meeting at Green Drinks!
