Definitely too bad that I was away from my email this weekend! A lot of
interesting mails have been sent around regarding transportation issues
in the OKC area.
I appreciate the constructive ideas and criticisms that have been
emailed about, especially those of O. Gail Poole, Wanda Jo Stapleton,
Bob Waldrop, Stan Stalcup, John Miggins, Seneca Scott, Evan Stair, and
several others. Transportation in the OKC area is currently a very hot
topic, to say the least, and we need to encourage good communication
from a variety of viewpoints whenever we can.
For the record, Sustainable OKC as an organization has not taken a
position on the I-40 realignment. Sustainable OKC as a general rule
doesn't take positions on such topics, although we all certainly have
our own strong opinions. SOKC is a non-political organization, and as
such, SOKC has made a conscious decision to refrain from political
activity. Sustainable OKC's mission currently is more in the arena of
networking and information dissemination through avenues such as this
listserv. We also host networking events such as Green Drinks and
presentations such as the Sustainable Solutions series in conjunction
with the Metropolitan Library System and panels such as the Smart Growth
series in conjunction with OCU. With respect to the presentations and
panels that are hosted by Sustainable OKC, we are well aware that some
of the speakers and/or topics might be controversial. It is also
probably true that we could work to find a greater diversity of
viewpoints to present at our panels and presentations. Again, our goal
is to help disseminate information, and the current conversation on the
listserv is one example of that.
A couple of earlier mails that made the rounds were disappointing to me
in that they contained what appeared to be personal attacks on
Sustainable OKC's leadership. I would ask that cooler heads prevail and
that people try to see SOKC for what it is: A grassroots organization
that is facilitating the local dialogue on issues of sustainability.
