RIDE YOUR BIKE TO WORK! BIKE to WORK DAY SCHEDULED for MAY 18

Bike to Work Day will be celebrated May 18 this year throughout the
Central Oklahoma region. The Association of Central Oklahoma
Governments (ACOG), and the cities of Oklahoma City, Edmond, Guthrie,
Norman and Yukon are helping to coordinate the third annual event.

Bike to Work Day 2007 is part of a national campaign to promote
bicycling as a healthy and efficient transportation alternative. The
League of American Bicyclists has recognized the month of May as
National Bike to Work Month since 1956, and National Bike to Work Day
annually offers metropolitan areas the opportunity to call attention to
the benefits of bicycling and to increase safety awareness among
bicyclists and motorists.

The primary event of Bike to Work Day includes group rides in all five
sponsoring communities. The rides in each respective city should wrap
up at 8:30 a.m., when speakers will make presentations and celebrate the
day.

Over the past two years, the group rides have grown larger, with the
bicycling community taking the lead advocacy role in the initiative.
With gasoline prices at an elevated level, and people having a keener
awareness of fitness and health, biking to work is becoming a more
tangible option for short commutes and traveling in good weather.

ACOG is also asking citizens to participate in a survey focused on
bicycling. Hard copies of the survey have been distributed to area
bicycle shops and libraries.

The survey can be taken online at ACOG's Web site through May 18. The
ACOG site, www.acogok.org, also includes complete details and route
information about Central Oklahoma Bike to Work Day 2007.

Call Lisa Kehoe or Jerry Church at ACOG, 234-2264 for more information.
