How-to-Ride Field Training by APT to Start Soon

The Alliance for Public Transportation (APT) will sponsor training and
accompany people wanting to learn how to catch and ride METRO Transit
buses. Dean Jackson, APT Chair, and the APT Board acted in early
September to authorize this activity. The 75 minute training will help
people learn how to hail a bus, transfer to another bus route,
understand the paper bus route schedules, park-and-ride, visit the
Downtown Transit Center (DTC), and more. The field training will be on
a fixed schedule (such as first and third Tuesdays at say 5:10 pm) to
help guests learn how to ride by just doing it with smiling, helpful APT
members. Each lesson will take about an hour and will likely depart
from a landmark like the Gold Dome at NW 23rd and Classen in Oklahoma
City. All this plus the APT's smiling volunteers will tell the trainees
fun facts about transit, about the APT, concerning transit's need for
dedicated local funding, and answer the guests' questions. If you
desire to be trained to be a "Trainer" later this month, please respond
to this email.

Scientific Survey says Transit is #2 on Citizens' List!

Public transportation is a high priority to Oklahoma City residents.
The Alliance for Public Transportation (APT) has learned that the new
Citywide 2008 survey of municipal services was released in early August.
The statistically valid survey results showed that improved public
transportation is in the top two services that residents think the City
should emphasize over the next two years. It was a statistically valid
survey of more than 1,000 Oklahoma City households and asked questions
about more than a dozen city services. Last year's 2007 survey showed
public transportation was rated third. The APT has been the main
Oklahoma nonprofit group boosting transit and raising awareness these
past three years.

Health Equity Campaign Meeting September 18

People's health status and their access to health care is often limited
or thwarted by social conditions and their setting, such as by
inadequate public transportation. This is one of the points likely to
come out of the statewide town hall Health Equity Campaign (HEC) meeting
on September 18 at the OKC Langston Campus. The APT Board will soon be
asking APT partners like you to approve of having the APT be a formal
partner supporting this campaign at the upcoming APT General Membership
meeting being planned for October. The September 18 HEC meeting starts
at 5:30 pm at the Langston Campus located at 4205 N. Lincoln. Please
attend but RSVP to Adrienne at (405) 271-9444, ext. 56535 to RSVP by
sometime on Monday, September 15 so they can plan for refreshments and
snacks.

Magic Bus TV Commercial
APT asks, "A Magic Bus for Who?" Or, "Who's" Magic Bus is it? I'd rate
that record a Bandstand 78... Regardless, yes, the State Department of
Rehabilitation Services (DRS) has gotten local TV stations to start
running the DRS's award-winning Magic Bus commercial again. It has been
virtually off the air for a couple of years, it seems. It is a fun,
lively video PSA piece with no script but features the music and lyrics
of that famous 60's vintage hit by the rock band, "The Who." The PSA
helps all viewers grasp that people with disabilities (using walkers,
white canes, wheelchairs) depend on and appreciate better transit.
Consider letting your TV station know that you appreciate them for
running the commercials!
