(Oklahoma City) Feb. 18, 2009 - The momentum for sustainability is growing
strong in Oklahoma. From gardening workshops and green festivals to public
hearings to discussions about everything from energy conservation to
coal-fired plants and nuclear energy - the number of environmentally related
events in central Oklahoma is burgeoning, but finding out about such events
isn't always easy.
In an effort to help people connect with Oklahoma's green network,
Sustainable OKC created an online Sustainable Community Calendar. The goal:
To provide central Oklahoma with quick and efficient access to a compilation
of green meetings, workshops, conferences, events and happenings hosted by a
wide range of non-profits, businesses, educational and government
organizations.
"The depth and breadth of informative, educational, and networking
opportunities related to making our city and region more sustainable is
amazing. From Norman to Stillwater, from El Reno to Midwest City and all
points in between, our colleges and universities, local sustainability
chapters, government organizations, citizen groups and many non-profits are
offering a wealth of events and projects," said Shauna Struby, president,
Sustainable OKC. "Providing aggregated information like this in the form of
an online calendar gives our community a means of accessing that information
quickly and efficiently."
To access the calendar, which offers viewers monthly and daily views along
with detailed information for individual events, just point your mouse to
www.sustainableokc.org and click on "calendar."
The public is invited to post information on an event, meeting or happening
to the calendar by emailing details to calendar at sustainbleokc.org.
"We owe a big thank you to OKC-resident and Sustainable OKC volunteer, Jill
Urie-Lanman, for keeping this calendar up-to-date with the latest
sustainable events," said Struby.
The mission of Sustainable OKC <http://www.sustainableokc.org/> is to
promote community sustainability by facilitating grassroots action,
fostering awareness of sustainability, and serving as an informational and
networking resource in the Oklahoma City area. Sustainable OKC is a 501(c)3
non-profit and a local chapter of the statewide Oklahoma Sustainability
Network <http://www.oksustainability.org/> .
