[OKC] The Great Squeeze . Sierra Club Movie Night May 29

FYI .

The movie documentary "The Great Squeeze" will be showing at the Backwoods
store on the NW corner of May & NW 122nd St in Oklahoma City this Friday,
May 29th at 7 pm.  There will be a happy half-hour social prior to the movie
with wine, cheese & crackers served.
The movie features interviews with several Peak Oil, climate change,
ecological and anthropological luminaries such as Richard Heinberg, James
Kunzler, Lester Brown, Edward O Wilson, David Stuart and Alexandra Cousteau.
The documentary attempts, and for the most part succeeds, in wrapping it's
arms around the pressing and earth-changing forces shaping the future of the
earth.  These include the physical and biological effects of climate change,
Peak Oil and energy descent, the rapid depletion of other resources, how
climate change will affect the world economy, the emerging crisis of fresh
water, a rising world population, the loss of biodiversity and the loss of
ecosystem services.  The film also looks at past civilizations and what we
might learn from them.  The Anasazi of the southwest US have a lot to teach
us in respect to overshooting the carrying capacity of the environment and
what rapid growth can get you.
But the movie also provides some thoughts on the transition to a new world
and what we can do to make the transition as comfortable as possible.  The
answer lies in what some of us are already advocating: downsizing,
sustainability, eating and producing local food, and actively transitioning
to a lower carbon lifestyle.
