USDOT ROLE IN LIVABILITY TO BE SUBJECT OF SEPTEMBER ONLINE FORUM
September 24, 2009, from 2:00 - 3:30 PM EST
ContextSensitiveSolutions.org is pleased to present a Forum on
Livability in partnership with the Office of the Secretary of
Transportation (OST), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the
Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The free event, held in webinar
format, will be on Thursday, September 24, 2009, from 2:00-3:30 PM EST.
The Forum on Livability will be the first national-scale opportunity for
dialogue with some of the key U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)
leaders and staff engaged in the new transportation and livability
initiatives of the Obama administration.
During the Forum, new information will be presented about the
Partnership for Sustainable Communities, announced on June 16, 2009 by
the USDOT, the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The partnership was
formed to help American families in all communities - rural, suburban
and urban - gain better access to affordable housing, more
transportation options, and lower transportation costs. The three
agencies will work together to ensure that these housing and
transportation goals are met while simultaneously protecting the
environment, promoting equitable development, and helping to address the
challenges of climate change.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has identified livability as
a key priority for transportation. The Secretary's vision is
"transportation policies that focus on people and communities who use
the transportation system." The DOT's goal is to chart a new course for
the future and use the transportation system to foster an improved
quality of life for all citizens.
The Forum will be led by Beth Osborne, USDOT Deputy Assistant Secretary
for Transportation Policy, Gloria Shepherd, FHWA Associate Administrator
for Planning, Environment, and Realty, and Susan Borinsky, FTA Associate
Administrator for Planning and Environment.
This webinar will discuss details about the DOT/HUD/ EPA Sustainable
Communities Partnership, the ongoing partnership between FTA and HUD
focusing on Transit-Oriented Development, as well as Secretary LaHood's
Livability Initiative within USDOT. Feedback and questions will be
welcomed from participants. A key objective of OST, FHWA and FTA is to
use this opportunity to engage the national community of practitioners,
advocates, and interested organizations to gain their insights and
assistance in achieving the Partnership goals.
