* December 13 - Book Club - Book club has been blessed by some
generous volunteers who have agreed to review the final chapters of A Nation
of Farmers by Astyk and Newton. This book has some very pertinent insights
and solutions to the growing food crisis in this country. Because of the
organization of the book (multiple short essays) you do not need to have
read any of the preceding chapters to understand the current one. And, the
very smart folks who attend Book Group are already so well versed in the
topics that you really don't even have to read the current chapter to
benefit from attending. We will be reviewing Chapter 6 on December 13
(always the 2nd Monday of the month). We meet at Full Circle Books, 50 Penn
Place, at 7pm. Please join us! And, as always, if you want to check out a
book from our library, let Diane or Astrud (daperkins at cox.net)
(Astrudray at aol.com) know and we will bring it to the meeting.
* December 14 Saving money. Doing more with less. Supporting local
businesses. Promoting walkable neighborhoods. Oklahoma City is embarking on
a series of efforts to reinvigorate the community, reduce city expenditures,
and evaluate practices based on long term costs and benefits. These efforts
are known as Capital Green. Citizen input is an important part of
determining priorities and goals for Capital Green, so a series of public
Open Houses have been planned to gather your comments and ideas. Please plan
to attend. 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM, South OKC Chamber of Commerce, 701 W I 240
Service Road or 7:00 -8:00 PM, Francis Tuttle Technology Center, 12777 North
Rockwell Drive For more information please contact
Capital.Green at chguernsey.com (note: this is not a Sierra Club event, but
the information is being provided as a service to our members)
* December 16 - There is no general group meeting in December, enjoy
the party Dec 5th!
* December 16 - The Green Country Group (Tulsa) will hold its
Christmas Party, Annual Awards Dinner and Auction, learn more at
http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/greencountry
* December 21 - Let's spend the evening of Dec 21st (Tuesday) getting
to know each other better as we share our memories, dreams, and hopes. As
we relax from the holiday rush, we will connect with all mankind as we watch
the December full moon around a campfire. Plan to join us at Stephanie and
Doug's farm for a potluck dinner "to explore and enjoy" our universe's
beauty and to celebrate the winter solstice around the ancient tradition of
a campfire. Full details at Urban Outing, Dec 2010
<http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/cimarron/pdfs/UrbanOutingNov2010.pdf> . If
the weather is questionable, I will cancel the outing.
* December 28 - Jan 3 (updated dates) - Backpack in Big Bend. Hike
the northern reaches of the Chihuahua Desert in Big Bend National Park.
Enjoy desert scenery few ever lay eyes on, with remote springs for campsites
and the enormous desert sky over your head at night. We will hike the
northern half of the Smokey Creek Trail, which is mainly just a dry
streambed through desert mountains. This trip is for experienced backpackers
who know their limitations and their equipment. Complete Big Bend Trip Info

* January 20, General Meeting - "Backyard Wildscaping" - Join us at
7:00 for wine and cheese and 7:30 for a program by Melynda Hickman, Wildlife
Diversity Biologist with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Melynda will tell us how to make our backyard environments more friendly to
wildlife, birds and beneficial insects. Although many of us have fairly
modest back yards, there is still much we can do to create healthier,
"wilder" environments that allow other critters we share the planet with to
prosper along with us. We can attain the beauty we are seeking and, at the
same time, be kind to the environment. Melynda is a very experienced
biologist. You'll really enjoy her talk. Meeting Location
