Recycling Web Seminar - Recycling & the Economy
Understanding the recycling industry's current and potential role in
supporting manufacturing
We're all familiar with recycling's environmental impact but how about its
connection to business development? When communicating the importance of
your community's recycling program to decision makers, how well do you
connect recycling to material development, jobs, and your regional economy?
This session will discuss the history of recycling in the US and how
companies have grown to look to recycled feedstock as a source of good
material. We'll learn adoptable tips from two states that are using that
information to help boost recycling through legislation and economic
development. And we'll wrap up with tools and resources to help you do the
same.
Date: February 4, 2010
Time: 2:00EST
Duration: 90 minutes
Speakers:
* Jerry Powell, Resource Recycling.
* Wayne Gjerde, Minnesota Pollution Control;
* Scott Mouw, North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention
* Kent Foerster, Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery for the
EPA
* Keefe Harrison & Steve Alexander, Association of Postconsumer
Plastic Recyclers

Can plastic with degradable additives be recycled with standard plastic?
No.
Why can't bottles with degradable additive be recycled with standard
plastic? The additives change the expectations for a plastic. Bottles with
degradable additives can be ground and melted like another bottle but with
reduced quality and service life expectations.
"The facts are very clear," reports David Cornell, the Technical Director
from the Asso-ciation of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR). "The
degradable additive concept effectively renders the product using the
additive non-recyclable. Many recycled plastics are used to make durable
goods. Failure of these next-use products, such as carpets or piping, could
range from distressing to tragic."
APR has seen no data which demonstrate no harm done during or after the
recy-cling process. With the variety of durable end uses recycled plastics
are used for, the idea of degrading material runs counter to value creation
and good stewardship.
