Three ways you can help

Of course, we can always use more human and financial resources and we'd
love to have you join our merry green band. Here are three ways you can help
-- pick one, two or all three:

1. Forward this email and ask your friends to sign up for our free
networking email listserv <http://www.sustainableokc.org/emaillist.php>
here. More people in the network = more info and resources to share = more
innovation & creativity = strong local, sustainable initiatives = more
resilient community.

2.	Become an official member of Sustainable OKC
<http://www.sustainableokc.org/form-membership.php> here.
3.	Of course we need the green stuff - money -- to make all this
happen. Any amount helps. Donate
<http://www.sustainableokc.org/getinvolved.php> here.

Change in presidency

After serving almost two years as president of Sustainable OKC, I wanted to
let you know I am stepping down at the end of the month. I won't tell you
it's to spend more time with my family since that's usually code for some
sort of scandal. There is none, as I don't have enough energy left to hatch
anything nefarious -- I'm simply ready for a break and Sustainable OKC is
fortunately blessed with good leadership ready to take the helm. I will
continue to serve on the board as past president and as co-chair of the
Transition Town OKC project. It's been a privilege to be prez (I've learned
so much and made many new friends). My heartfelt thanks to all of you.

I'm pleased to announce that Dan Yates, one of Sustainable OKC's board
members, was unanimously elected president and will take office effective
Feb. 1. Dan is Director of Organization Development at the Groundwater
Protection Council. As a Sustainable OKC board member, Dan has worked
diligently on the Buy Fresh Buy Local Central Oklahoma initiative, served as
our board secretary, and planned, organized and reinstated member meetings.
He is an eloquent and articulate writer and speaker, skilled organizer, an
enthusiastic beer aficionado, and all-around great guy to hang out with. Did
I mention he has a beautifully dry and sarcastic sense of humor?

Interview with Dan

Dan.jpgDan and I did a little email Q&A a couple of days ago so you could
learn a little more about him, and he sent this photo of himself engaging in
one of his favorite activities. Hint: Dan is the one with the beer in his
hand.

Shauna: What prompted you to get involved with Sustainable OKC?

Dan: Having worked for a national non-profit for 10 years I'd been looking
for a local non-profit group to volunteer with and hopefully make use of
some of the things I've learned at the local level. I talked three or four
friends into coming to Green Drinks with me a couple of years ago and I've
been involved ever since.

Shauna: What have you learned since you became involved with Sustainable
OKC?

Dan: Almost everything I know about sustainable living, I've learned since
becoming involved with Sustainable OKC. The biggest change my family has
made is an increase in our consumption of locally made food and other
products.

Shauna: When thinking about Oklahoma City's future, where would you like to
see our city in 10 or 20 years with regard to sustainability?

Dan: I'd like to see two things happen. First, we need more sidewalks in
OKC. Second, I'd like to see 100,000 people (or more) change at least one
thing in their life to become more sustainable. I think the individual
choices we make have the greatest impact.

Shauna: And so folks can get to know you a bit, please tell us a little
about your preferences for local food, restaurants, beverages and of course
hobbies.

Dan: Favorite local foods

Tomatoes: I love tomatoes, I especially love locally grown tomatoes.

Greens: we make a lot of pesto at home and use mostly locally grown greens
(basil, spinach and arugula).

Favorite local restaurants

Sala Thai, Sauced, Tokyo Sushi (get the double crunchy)

Favorite local beverages

I like beer. I've been a big fan of Belle Isle brewery for a long time
(order the Fritz Mix). I've also recently become a huge fan of COOP Ale
Works and especially like their DNR.

Hobbies

Currently, disc golf is my number one hobby. We load up our two dogs (Duke
and Dexter) and play at Lake Arcadia most weekends.I also play Guitar Hero
and have made it through several songs on expert and five-starred "Band on
the Run."
