[OKC] What an opportunity -- white roofs

Shauna - I have noticed that some insurance companies are offering an endorsement on the home policy that provides for changing to green products when there is a claim.
This is something that people might check with their insurers about. I saw this endorsementt on a Traveler's policy recently. Do not know if other companies are offering, but if they begin to have enough of their customers asking about the endorsement, it may begin to show up on more policies.
As with all endorsements how it works may vary from company to company and you would need to ask your agent about the details.

Great info! Thanks Kenneth.
We’ll definitely take this into consideration.
Anyone else have discoveries to share about more sustainable and resilient choices for replacing hail-damaged roofs?

I definitely applaud your posting about white roofs . White roofs in general are more reflective than dark roofs but surprisingly some white roofs are not "cool roofs" per Energy Star criteria whereas some darker colors are. Most shingle companies make "cool roof" shingles (in several colors) which reflect sun/ absorb less heat / reduce energy cost in summer , etc. but they do cost more so homeowners may have to pay the extra cost out of pocket. Other more sustainable alternatives are metal roofs or shingles made from recycled tires. Unfortunately they do cost alot more upfront than asphalt and may still be damaged by large hail (not as easily though). I would ask the roofing company about white roof/ cool roof options.
I too am trying to decide which way to go since our roof has been damaged by the recent hail and will require replacement . We would love to replace the asphalt shingles with all corrugated metal roof as used on our studio roof (which also got dinged ) but it will add several thousands extra to replace. We are hoping that the premium credits for a more durable roof and reduced risk of replacement from another hail storm will make it a more affordable option.
In the meantime would love to find a recycling company to do something with all the asphalt shingles.

With all the roof replacement going on comes a huge opportunity to make a difference in reducing energy consumption with white roofs. Please help spread the word! We just had our adjustor here and roofer this week -- white roofing materials are available!
White Roofs to Sweep the World, Fight Climate Change <http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/05/white-roofs-figh-climate-change-chui.php>

It's long been known that white roofs <http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/raise-white-roof.html> reflect more heat back into space, reducing the amount of electricity used for A/C and thus drastically cutting down on energy consumption. Some estimates say they save billions of dollars annually <http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/09/lighter-roofs-save-billion-dollars-annually.php> . And they've just gotten their most public, most official shout out yet--Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu <http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/02/obama-green-team-stephen-chu-secretary-of-energy.php> has recommended that the world should try to have "white roofs everywhere to help fight climate change"--remarks that were carried in hundreds of news wires around the world.
