Experts Provide Policies for a Steady State Economy
Arlington, VA (November 17, 2010) - The Center for the Advancement of the
Steady State Economy (CASSE) and Economic Justice for All (Leeds, UK) have
produced a groundbreaking report, Enough is Enough. Culminating from the
inaugural Steady State Economy Conference, where global experts on
sustainability assembled, Enough is Enough provides a blueprint for solving
the social and environmental problems plaguing the economy. Rob Dietz,
CASSE's executive director says, "The business-as-usual response to economic
crisis is not working. We strive for economic growth to avoid recession,
but more growth threatens the health of environmental systems that are the
very basis of the economy. It's time to recognize that enough is enough."
Prior to Enough is Enough, there was no comprehensive compilation of policy
tools for establishing a steady state economy, an economy that meets
people's needs with fairness and without undermining the life-support
systems of the planet. Enough is Enough provides specific policies to limit
resource use and pollution, provide fair income opportunities, reform the
monetary system, change the way we measure progress, secure full employment,
and change consumer behavior. It is the first manual for a steady state
economy.
Peter Victor, author of Managing without Growth and keynote speaker at the
conference, states, "We've got to get these ideas to citizens and decision
makers around the world. People are just beginning to understand the
fundamental flaws in our economic systems, and they want viable alternatives
like the ones offered in this report." Other expert speakers and report
authors include Andrew Simms (policy director for the New Economics
Foundation), Dan O'Neill (European Director for CASSE), Tim Jackson (author
of Prosperity without Growth and professor at the University of Surrey),
Kate Pickett, co-author of The Spirit Level and professor at the University
of York), and Brian Czech (president of CASSE and author of Shoveling Fuel
for a Runaway Train).
Free downloads of the full report and a summary (both in pdf format), as
well as videos of the keynote presentations from the conference are
