Press Release
Morrissette to Host Important Rail Study
Kansas State Senator Dick Kelsey and Rail Officials to Testify
OKLAHOMA CITY - State Rep. Richard Morrissette (D-OKC) will host a
legislative study to review progress and developing plans for the expansion
of passenger rail service along the Kansas-Oklahoma-Texas corridor.
"I've had many requests for this review to look carefully at where we are in
the process of expansion of service to Kansas. In looking for answers to
these inquiries, I began to realize that much is being learned and that soon
we will see this happen, for the betterment of the overall economy."
Morrissette commented.
"Some have made a political issue of rail expansion, saying that the cost to
grow this vital form of transportation is "Big Government Wasteful
Spending". The data to be presented at the hearing should help to dispel
that overblown myth. The truth is, the largest sector of the population is
steadily moving toward mass transit dependency of which rail can be a
positive key component in meeting transportation needs. And, for Oklahoma,
in particular, with our many small towns, where economic development has
come to plateau, the train would offer an infusion of travelers to bring
with them tourist dollars, not to mention new businesses to spring up along
the way."
The hearing will feature Republican Kansas State Senator Dick Kelsey, author
of last session's Senate Bill 409, as well as officials from all three
state's departments of transportation, members of the Texas state
legislature's Transportation and Homeland Security Committee and others to
include citizen rail enthusiasts, Amtrak, BNSF and the FRA.
This important hearing is open to the public and will be held from 1 to 4
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the State Capitol, 2300 N. Lincoln Blvd.,
Oklahoma City, OK 73105, in room 432-A. Visitors to the hearing should park
on the south side of the Capitol.
"I'm hoping that this meeting will serve to identify what all three states
along the corridor need to do in order to keep moving in the direction of
having a passenger train that can co-exist with freight, and get us all up
to Kansas City and out to the coasts, and just as importantly, bring coastal
dwellers to our region." concluded Morrissette.
