September Events

*	September 13 - After our summer hiatus, Cimarron Book Group will resume monthly meetings on
Monday, September 13, 7:00pm, at Full Circle Bookstore at 50 Penn Place south of Penn Square Mall.
We are continuing our study of A Nation of Farmers: Defeating the Food Crisis on American Soil by
Astyk and Newton. Chapter 4 will be reviewed by Diane. Don't worry if you haven't been around for
the first part of this book. You can still learn and contribute to the discussion! Kelly will review
chapter 5 in October. We are seeking volunteers to review chapters 6-8 which will now happen in
Nov-Jan. Please help us keep the Book Group interactive and volunteer to review one chapter of this
informative and pertinent book.  Also for September, Becky will review the book Plains Apache
Ethnobotany by Julia Jordan. This should be a fascinating discussion of traditional collection,
preparation, and use of plants for food, medicine, ritual and material culture.  Please bring ideas
of books you might want to share with the group (or the group may want to read together) and join us
Monday 9/13. And, don't forget that, if you want to check out a book from our library, you need to
let Diane (daperkins at cox.net) or Astrud (Astrudray at aol.com) know ASAP so we can get it for you and
bring it to the Book Group or General meetings. 
*	September 16 - General Meeting - 7:00 pm - Java Dave's, upstairs - 10 NE 10th, OKC.  Six
political candidates endorsed by Oklahoma Club Oklahoma will speak about their commitment to
environmental stewardship and clean energy development on Thurs, Sept. 16, at the organization's
Cimarron Group meeting.  The public is invited to the free event, which begins at 7 p.m. with snacks
and one-on-one visits with the candidates. They will each speak for five minutes and participate in
a question and answer session.  Candidates invited to the forum on Sept. 16 are running for office
in central and northwest Oklahoma.   Those expected to participate are Rep. Al McAffrey from House
District (HD) 88; Dana Orwig, candidate for HD 87; Former Rep. Wanda Jo Peltier, candidate for HD
93; Anastasia Pittman from HD 99; Rep. Jim Priest, candidate for Attorney General; and Rep. Cory
Williams from HD 34. Sierra Club has endorsed a total 18 candidates and supports seven more who have
already won their 2010 races. Those with races in the northeast and southern parts of the state will
be invited to similar forums held by other Sierra Club groups. To volunteer to bring snacks for this

*	September 18 & 19 - Cabin Retreat Near Quartz Mountain State Park, SW Oklahoma. Enjoy a
relaxing weekend hiking and birding in the beautiful Quartz Mountain section of the Wichita
Mountains. The park offers scenic self interpretive hiking trails and bird watching. Limited to 10

*	September 24 (new, new date) --  Urban Outing to celebrate the arrival of Fall --  Dinner at
7:00 PM at Royal Bavaria Restaurant in Moore.  Let's spend another evening eating dinner together so
we might get to know each other better as we share our memories, dreams, and hopes. A chance to
learn more about our Mother Earth at this season change as we continue to explore and enjoy our
planet Earth. And, of course, this coming together to celebrate the arrival of fall gives a chance
to eat with friends. The date of  Thursday September 23  was chosen as it is the fall equinox and

*	September 26, 2010, Day Hike in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. Activities will run from
~12:45pm to ~4:45pm We'll explore upper Mount Scott, check out the visitor center, and hike to the
boulder field in the Charon's Garden Wilderness Area. This trail involves scrambling and boulder
hopping in some areas. Difficulty level is moderate. Leader: Blair Williams, e-mail

October Events

*	October 9 - Geocaching Fall Fest Time (sponsored by the Oklahoma Geocachers) at Eufaula
State Park. The event is free to all. Activities include: Hide and seek: The main event! Accuracy
contest: How close can you come to the zero point? Test your units' accuracy against the other
brands. Children's Game: Fun for the younger cachers and the young at heart. Our main objective is
to have a great time and maybe find a few caches and make some new friends. Other fun activities,
sessions and general geocaching good times. Contact Adrianne Holmes at 715-0811 or
adrianneholmes at sbcglobal.net if you are interested in attending and camping together. Ronnie Stroh
will have a few extra GPSs available to use. Registration fees are for meal plan only. Registration
forms and Release Forms are not available at this time. More details will follow.
*	October 16 (Saturday) - Cimarron Group Round-up 2010 at Roman Nose State Park - A fun day of
hikes, demos, education, laughter, music, great food and conviviality. Round-up is a family friendly

*	October 21st - General Meeting - 7:00 pm - Upstairs from Carinos Italian (was Java Dave's),
- 10 NE 10th, OKC.  "Global Climate Change and the Implications for Oklahoma" - A look at the hard
science of climate change and what it could mean for Oklahoma through the rest of this century. -
Gary McManus, Associate State Climatologist Oklahoma Climatological Survey Gary McManus joined the
Oklahoma Climatological Survey in May 1999 and currently serves as the Associate State Climatologist
for Oklahoma. Gary's tasks are focused on providing the citizens and decision-makers of Oklahoma
with vital and timely weather information, as well as assessing the past weather conditions for the
state. Gary is editor in chief of Oklahoma's Monthly and Seasonal Climate Summaries, and was the
lead author of OCS' Statement on Climate Change. Gary has done extensive research cataloguing
Oklahoma's weather hazards. A native of Buffalo, Oklahoma, Gary earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in
Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma.
*	October 23rd- Birding and Burgers. This is a joint offering of Payne County Audubon Society
and the Cimarron Group of the Sierra Club. Activities will include a guided morning bird walk
followed by a backyard cookout lunch. Afternoon activities include a fishing derby and a plant walk.
There is no group limit, but advance registration is necessary to join in the lunch. Contact Les
