August
* August 6 - 7 - Enjoy a trip to the Will Rogers Museum, Claremore, Ok
and Woolaroc Museum, Bartlesville, OK. Learn about your state's history.
We will visit museums dedicated to two of Oklahoma's most famous native
sons. The Will Rogers museum frames the family tomb in the sunken garden and
spreads across the southern horizon is the Tiawah Valley. The twenty-acre
museum grounds, purchased by Will Rogers in 1911 for $500 an acre, was his
planned retirement home site. Following his untimely death, his widow and
children donated the land, along with great parts of the collection,
including movies!!! The Woolaroc Museum presents one of the world's most
unique collections of Western art and artifacts, Native American pottery,
baskets, beads, blankets and cultural art, historical displays, and one of
the most complete collections of Colt firearms. The 3,700 acre working
ranch and wildlife preserve is home to more than 30 varieties of native and
exotic animals and birds. This will include overnight lodging at the Super
8 Hotel in Claremore, unless you are from the Tulsa area and choose to spend
Saturday night at home. Complete information is online at

* August 13 - Outings Planning meeting at Adrianne Holme's house, 1010
Locust Lane, Edmond 73013 on Saturday August 13th, 6 PM - 8:30 PM. This is
where we come together to brainstorm ideas for trips and discuss which trips
are already on the calendar for fall. She'll provide the meat (probably
dogs and burgers) and paper products if you all help with side dishes.
BYOB. RSVP and if you are coming from out of town and need a place to
crash. I have two cots available if you don't mind crashing in my living
room. Try to RSVP via email so I know how much meat to prepare.

* August 18 - General Meeting - Tar Creek film (96 min) This
environmental documentary examines the Tar Creek Superfund Site, a stretch
of Oklahoma heartland that has long been profoundly damaged by zinc and lead
mining. The piece looks back as far as 100 years into Tar Creek's history
(when the U.S. government removed natives from the land), and traces the
many offenses that have been committed against the area and its people over
the past century (Producer: Matt Myers / 303.523.7331/ tarcreek at gmail.com) -
Join us at 7:00 for wine and cheese and 7:30 for the program.

* September 2 - 5 - Backpack Crest Trail near Nogal Peak, NM. This
moderate outing is a favorite of many experienced backpackers and will be
ideal for a second backpack for beginners. It will offer a wide variety of
views to enjoy. You will see Douglas Fir trees, grassy meadows, Aspen
groves, and great views of the Rio Bonito basin. Our view to the west will
give us a chance to see both Whites Sands and Valley of the Fires (In the
Malpais Lava Beds) at the same time, framed in by the San Andreas Mountains.
Weather permitting, you will see a fantastic sunset from a viewpoint that is
a short distance from our camp. Lincoln county is a very popular area of New
Mexico steeped in a rich history including former residents Billy the Kid
and Smokey the Bear. Complete information is online at
