With the help of public-private financing, fresh food retailers in the
United States recently agreed to open or expand 1,500 stores in
underserved communities to make affordable, healthier food options more
accessible to more than 9.5 million customers in areas identified as
food deserts. The new Healthy Food Financing Initiative recently
unveiled by First Lady Michelle Obama will not only promote the health
benefits of combating food deserts, but also the jobs that these new
projects will create in their communities.

Commercial buildings in downtown San Francisco could be required to
provide indoor bicycle parking accommodations under a proposal
introduced at last week's Board of Supervisors meeting. Providing secure
bicycle parking would encourage would-be bicycle commuters deterred by
the prospect of leaving their bicycle locked to on-street poles and bike
racks for hours, where they could be vulnerable to theft. "It's the last
major gap in solving the commuter bike parking problem," said Dave
Snyder, executive director of the California Bicycle Coalition.

A new study by the District of Columbia Office of Planning has found
transportation costs range from $8,500 to $25,000 per household in the
D.C. region. The study, prepared in cooperation with the Center for
Neighborhood Technology, investigates how neighborhood characteristics
such as proximity to jobs and access to transit vary across the region
and affect household transportation costs. According to the study,
transportation costs can be lower if neighborhoods enable their
residents to live without owning a car.

Schoolstreet Homes, a new compact development in the Chicago suburb of
Libertyville, will be the site of 26 single family homes and 15 loft
units, all designed to fit within a 3-acre area. The new model infill
development is designed to conserve land, promote walking and transit,
and be more compatible with sustainability than the large homes on
sizable lots that have long dominated the Chicago-area suburban market.

The Utah Transit Authority recently opened two major light-rail lines on
the same day, a first in the United States. The two new lines were
funded by a voter-approved quarter-cent sales tax increase, along with
federal stimulus and local developer funding. The new lines will more
than double the number of train cars operating in Utah, and will nearly
double overall light-rail mileage in the state. More than 14,000 people
per day are expected to use the two lines.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Four-lane highways through the center of downtown just don't revitalize
... [We gave] our engineers a different problem to solve. Rather than
build a highway, we told them, 'Transportation is not an end unto
itself. We have to fit it into the culture of the community.'"
