August

*	August 18 - General Meeting - Tar Creek film (96 min) This
environmental documentary examines the Tar Creek Superfund Site, a stretch
of Oklahoma heartland that has long been profoundly damaged by zinc and lead
mining. The piece looks back as far as 100 years into Tar Creek's history
(when the U.S. government removed natives from the land), and traces the
many offenses that have been committed against the area and its people over
the past century (Producer: Matt Myers / 303.523.7331/ tarcreek at gmail.com) -
Join us at 7:00 for wine and cheese and 7:30 for the program. Meeting
Location <http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/cimarron/meeting_place.htm>
*	August 20 - Reskilling - Solar Battery Building: The guy who is
teaching this class (with some serious arm twisting administered by Diane
Perkins) had his computer running during the ice storm power outages last
winter. This class will be held from 1-3pm at Mayflower Church (3901 NW
63rd). Cost is $10.00. Registration is open now and will close August 17.

September

*	September 2 - 5 - Backpack Crest Trail near Nogal Peak, NM. This
moderate outing is a favorite of many experienced backpackers and will be
ideal for a second backpack for beginners. It will offer a wide variety of
views to enjoy. You will see Douglas Fir trees, grassy meadows, Aspen
groves, and great views of the Rio Bonito basin. Our view to the west will
give us a chance to see both Whites Sands and Valley of the Fires (In the
Malpais Lava Beds) at the same time, framed in by the San Andreas Mountains.
Weather permitting, you will see a fantastic sunset from a viewpoint that is
a short distance from our camp. Lincoln county is a very popular area of New
Mexico steeped in a rich history including former residents Billy the Kid
and Smokey the Bear. Complete information is online at
http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org <http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/outings>
*	September 3 - 4 - Canoe/Kayak/Dayhike in the Wichita Mountains
Wildlife Refuge. Canoe/Kayak French Lake and Quanah Lake at the Wichita
Wildlife Refuge. We will join the Red Earth Group for this outing. We'll
explore areas of the WWR that you have never seen on foot by kayaking Quanah
Parker Lake and French Lake. Fishing while kayaking is allowed but know the
rules. Chris Applegate will lead a hike to Mount Baldy and possibly a second
hike to one of his favorite spots. Beginners are welcome. Bring your own
water craft, fishing and car camping gear! Complete information is online

national park unit in Oklahoma. The Chickasaw National Recreational Area
(formerly Platt National Park) encompasses cool creeks flowing over
travertine terraces; offers a view of the silhouette of a great blue heron
perched on the shore of the Lake of the Arbuckles; seeing families reuniting
in historic campgrounds; joining local residents coming to fill jugs with
mineral water; and the idyllic escape so many find through visits to the
park. Join us as we explore on Saturday historic CCC structures, falls and
springs in the park and tour the brand new Chickasaw Cultural Center located
nearby. On Sunday, we will travel to the Turner Falls area exploring the
upper Honey Creek geology, water features, and Turner Falls themselves.
