*	March 26 & 27 - Beginner's Backpack to Horsethief Springs (SE
Oklahoma). Horsethief Springs Trail is one of the most beautiful trails in
OK. The trail begins at Cedar Lake and loops through many different tree
species -- loblolly pine, sweet gum, dogwood, and many others. The full
trail loop is 10+ miles and has an elevation gain and loss of 1050 feet.
However, we will "cheat" a little and cut off most of the 5 miles of climb
by beginning the hike off Talimina Drive on the Ouachita National Recreation
Trail for 1.2 miles before we connect on the second half of the Horsethief
Springs loop. So, we will hike a total of only about 6 miles down the
northern face of Winding Stair Mountain to Cedar Lake, with a 200 foot
elevation gain and about a 1050 foot elevation loss during the hike.

*	March 26 - Cimarron Book Group Morphs into re-skilling group. You
were warned it was coming and now it is here. The Book Group is no more.
But, the replacement group (which still needs a formal name perhaps?) is up
and running with a food preservation canning class which will take place at
2pm, Saturday March 26, at Mayflower Church (3901 NW 63rd St.). Tuition will
be $15.00 per person and includes the OSU Extension/ USDA Home Canning Guide
and a jar of food each student prepares themselves during the class. There
are only 15 slots available in this first class. Registration is now open
(daperkins at cox.net or (405)229-6147) and closes February 20 at 5pm. I will
establish a waiting list for anyone who is not chosen (by lottery) for this
first class. Hopefully, I will be over-run with requests for classes and we
can have many more. We still need volunteers to teach a variety of topics to
the group. I envision this group as a way to help each other be more
self-reliant and resilient personally and as a community. I want someone to
teach me (and us) what I didn't learn from my grandparents and might need to
know during the power-down challenges that are on the horizon. Use the
contact info above to tell me what you have to offer the group. My role is
to facilitate your teaching. Please contact Diane Perkins
(daperkins at cox.net) or Astrud Ray (yes, the library will continue,
astrudray at aol.com) if further information is needed.

*	PlanOKC Update - Oklahoma City is developing a new comprehensive
plan, called PlanOkc. It is a long-range plan with the goal of ensuring a
healthy environment, community, and economy for our residents. PlanOkc is
for the entire city-all 621 square miles. There are nine elements of
PlanOkc. Learn more about each one by clicking on the element name on the
website (below), and feel free to contact the OKC Planning Dept. with any
questions or feedback. PlanOkc will guide the decisions that affect the
choices you will have in the future about places to live, work, learn, shop,
and play. One section-greenokc-identifies how development impacts our
environment and natural resources. The purpose of this element is to ensure
that we accommodate growth that maintains a healthy environment for the
benefit of future generations. When the plan is ready to be adopted, we
will needs hordes of sustainability proponents to help get it passed by the
City Council. Sign-up for updates from each element's group meetings (or to
participate in them) online: http://www.okc.gov/planokc. Please E-mail
sderichsaweiler at cox.net if you are interested in attending the City Council
meeting when the plan is considered for adoption.
