May
* May 19- General Meeting. Can Wildlife & Windpower CoExist? Join us
at 7:00 for wine and cheese and 7:30 for the program.
<http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/cimarron/meeting_place.htm> Meeting Location
Jay Pruitt will talk about "The threatened Lesser Prairie Chicken and Wind
Power." Perhaps they CAN co-exist with proper planning. Should the Sierra
Club support one over the other or can we support both? Come and find out.
Jay is the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy's Director of Conservation and an
active member of the Oklahoma Council of the Audubon Society.
* May 21 - Re-skilling group - Do you want to grow your own organic
fruit to add to your health and the variety of food you produce yourself?
Are you afraid of ladders? (If not, you should be! As a Physical Therapist,
I see many ladder-related injuries.) Lee Ann Barton of Wilson Nurseries
will be instructing us in pruning fruit trees for Backyard Orchards. The
idea is that you keep the trees pruned to your height so that you don't need
a ladder to take care of your orchard. Another really cool thing about
Backyard Orchards is that the trees are planted very close together yet
produce enough for household use. Everyone has room for this in their yard.
Lee Ann will also have planting and ordering information available for
Backyard Orchards. These trees are specially grown and adapted to Oklahoma.
This class will be held in my tiny back yard (near Piedmont- details to
follow) on Saturday, May 21, at 1pm. Cost for the class is $10.00. Sign-up
for the class is by e-mail to <mailto:daperkins at cox.net> daperkins at cox.net.
Class size is limited to 15 participants and the sign-up ends on May 8
* May 22 - Did you know that there are currently fish consumption
advisories issued on sixteen lakes in Oklahoma? Many fish tested in these
lakes were found to contain levels of toxic mercury that present a health
hazard if regularly consumed. In addition to several lakes in the Wichita
Mountains Wildlife Refuge making the list, the Wichitas are also heavily
affected by serious haze pollution that limits visibility and presents
health dangers to sensitive populations. Coal-fired power plants are the
largest source of mercury pollution and are a major source of haze
pollution. This pollution is making us sick -- causing asthma, developmental
problems for children and even death. Fortunately, the Environmental
Protection Agency has proposed long-overdue Clean Air Act standards to clean
up this pollution and protect our health. Join us Sunday, May 22nd to learn
how you can contribute to cleaning up our air and water. We will be hosting
a family picnic, catch and release fishing, and hiking. We will also help
you learn more about mercury pollution and making safe, healthy seafood
choices. <http://action.sierraclub.org/site/R?i=4XksFE255_8J-AOKfxQbJg..>

* June 18 - Burgers and Beer party at David Franklin's house. The
outings committee invites all members and friends to join us for a causal

* June 25 - Water garden tour. Tour some of the most beautiful water
gardens in central Oklahoma in the annual free tour sponsored by the Water
Garden Society of Oklahoma. We will go as a group on Saturday, June 25th at
8:30 a.m., meeting to carpool at a site to be determined. Some gardens are
shaded, some are not, some are beginning gardens, others are advanced, and,
occasionally, one is a converted swimming pool with mature planting. The
owners and creators host each of these gardens. This is an excellent tour
for the person who wants ideas, or the person who like to enjoy others'
gardens. We will meet at a site to be determined to carpool and tour four or
five gardens, ending with a picnic lunch in Martin Nature Center, or a
restaurant lunch, ending about 2 p.m. The garden tour is not a Sierra Club
sponsored event and has not been organized by Sierra Club. Contact Nancy
Condit for more info about this gathering at <mailto:nancond4 at aol.com>
