Subject: Free EPA Webinar 11/17: Recycling at Sporting Events

EPA SMM Web Academy– Creating Winning Recycling Programs at Sporting
Events, November 17, 2011, 1:00-2:30 EST (12:00-1:30 CST)****

To register, go to: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/782017650****

Description: Carrying out a routine recycling program at a stadium or
other sporting venues can be challenging enough. Creating a winning
recycling program at a temporary, large, multi-venue, community-wide
sporting event can test even the most experienced sustainability
professionals.****

This webinar will provide basic principles for setting up a multifaceted
program beyond the venue site such as "spill over" public space, pedestrian
areas, event hotels, team restaurants and even outdoor event spaces such as
streets or plazas. Real world case studies will be presented by panelists
with experience in planning and executing recycling and waste management
programs at such events.****
Speaker Bios:****

**· ***Jacob Hassan,* Community Recycling Coordinator in U.S. EPA
Chicago’s Materials Management program, will give a nuts-and-bolts primer
on establishing a recycling program at large, multi-venue sporting events
using examples from his work at the 2010 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four
basketball championships. Jacob will also cover best practices associated
with running a recycling program involving the venues, high pedestrian
traffic areas, hotels and restaurants and how his team overcame challenges
such as a game day windstorm.****

**· ***Mark Root,* Strategic Account Executive with Coca-Cola
Recycling, is responsible for building lasting recycling programs with key
customers and events. Beverage companies and other corporate sponsors play
a significant role in making recycling successful at large sporting events.
Mark will provide a perspective on engaging corporate partners and
highlight an approach to recycling that has proven successful. He will talk
about the importance of driving the consumer to recycle and will provide
operational insights to ensure that recyclable materials are recovered.****

**· ***Bruce Rayner,* Chief Green Officer with Athletes for a Fit
Planet, tackles waste management in the challenging settings of street race
courses, golf tournaments and other temporary outdoor venues that are set
up one day and dismantled the next. Bruce will tap more than a decade of
experience of working at these sporting events to share strategies for
waste reduction, recycling and food composting.****

**· ***Laura Moreno,* Environmental Scientist in U.S. EPA Pacific
Southwest Region’s Pollution Prevention and Solid Waste program, will give
a brief presentation on EPA’s WasteWise Food Recovery Challenge and how it
can help event planners ****
