Free presentation focuses on living “off the grid”
An Oklahoma City couple, Barbara Hagen and Bruce Johnson, have lived “off the grid” using only solar and wind power for 34 years and will detail their story during a free presentation on Thursday, December 1 from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
The event will take place on the second floor of the Engineering Technology building at OSU-OKC, 900 N. Portland.
The presentation will cover the importance of energy efficiency while exploring the day-to-day activities of Hagen and Johnson’s low-impact lifestyle. The couple uses renewable energy in their northeast Oklahoma City home for space heating, hot water heating, water pumping and to power ovens and food dehydrators.
“Bruce and Barbara’s home is full of innovative and creative adaptations to off-the-grid living,” Jennifer Gooden, director of the City’s Office of Sustainability said. “Sustainability is not just a buzz word for them — it’s a way of life.”
Low-impact living is a lifestyle in which people attempt to minimize the use of the earth's natural resources and their own resources.
“Energy efficiency and conservation are the most important aspects of the low-impact lifestyle,” said Johnson.
The workshop is sponsored by the City of Oklahoma City’s Department of Sustainability, the USGBC and OSU-OKC School of Engineering Technology. Funding was made available through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.
