A panel discussion entitled "Sustainability" will be held on Thursday, Sept.
8th, at 7 pm in Oklahoma City University's Bishop Angie Smith Chapel, on NW
23rd St., just east of Indiana St. Attendance at the event is free and open
to the public.
Panel participants will deal with three aspects of sustainability that
affect people everywhere, organizers say. Issues to be addressed include
the global economy, environmental sustainability, and U.S. military global
commitments, including the current conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya.
Addressing globalization and its impact will be Rev. Dr. Stan G. Duncan,
author of "The Greatest Story Oversold." Duncan holds a B.A. in political
science and economics from the University of Oklahoma and Masters in
Divinity from Vanderbilt University. An ordained pastor with dual standing
in the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Chrtist),
Duncan has pastored churches and held the position of Merrell Fellow in
economics and theology at Harvard University Divinity School. Deeply
concerned about globalization and poverty, Duncan founded and leads the
Jubilee Task Force and Economic Globalization Task Force within the United
Church of Christ. He has led annual delegations to study economic
development in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Panel presenter Robert Waldrop will address challenges and opportunities in
environmental sustainability. Waldrop is a fourth generation Oklahoman and
founder of the Oklahoma Food Coop that sells only locally grown foods and
locally made items. He holds a Certificate in Permaculture from Barking
Frogs Permaculture and has been an Assistant Instructor of the OKC
Permaculture Design Course in conjunction with the Permaculture Institute of
New Mexico. He has been the keynote speaker at annual conferences of the
Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and was a presenter at the 2nd Annual
Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions in Ohio.
Discussing war and peace issues will be Dr. Katherine Scheirman, MD,
Colonel, USAF.MC <http://usaf.mc/> , retired. Dr. Scheirman received a BA
from Michigan State University, her MD from the University of Oklahoma, and
an MHA from Baylor University. She retired after 20 years active service
from the Air Force in 2006 in the rank of Colonel. Her final assignment was
as Chief of Medical Operations for U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Ramstein Air
Base, Germany, during the height of the Iraq War. In this capacity,
Scheirman was responsible for medical operations for ten Air Force hospitals
and clinics in Europe. In retirement, Dr. Scheirman has been an advocate
for veterans and the military, and serves as a senior advisor to VoteVets.
She is a teaching fellow for the American College of Physicians and is
active in Doctors for America.
Moderators for the panel discussion will be Nathaniel Batchelder, Director
of the Peace House in Oklahoma City, and Dr. Robin Meyers, professor of
Rhetoric and Ethics at Oklahoma City University and Senior Pastor at
Mayflower Congregational Church UCC.
This event is cosponsored by The Peace House, the Oikos Scholars Program at
