Message-ID: I have just re-read the predictions that Bob referenced in a recent post http://www.aspousa.org/index.php/2012/01/2012-predictions/ - and found myself wondering about the question of optimism vs pessimism in the sustainability community. Being very optimistic about the future myself, I read the very pesimistic predictions by the peak oil community, and wondered if the sustainability community tends more towards optimism or pesimism. I realize that we face great challenges. supporting an increasing population, in a sustainable manner - given the realities of climate change, peak oil, habitat destruction, etc. is going to be tough. I think we can do it. On the energy front, I am very excited about the strides that are being made in wind and solar. Countries like Scotland are well on their way to supplying all of their electrical needs from renewables http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/01/scotlands-ambitious-100-clean-energy-target-2020/ The cost of electricity from pv panels is approaching grid parity. It is very realistic to think that parity will be achieved some time in the next 10 years, and costs will keep coming down from there. Natural gas is artificially cheap at the moment - but it will probably not stay at $2.50 bbtu for long. I think it is a good bet that the PV industry will escape gravity some time in the next 10 years, and then we will see some big employment opportunities, as well as an economic uptick - as we start to keep more of our energy dollars at home. Are there any other thoughts on the question of optimism vs pesimism in the sustainability community? Thanks. David. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Alas, if only it were true, but it is not. Below is an article from Our Finite World blog (another of my info sources), summarizing three major articles in the academic press that lay out the continuing problem. As is common with the academic press, the full articles are behind paywalls, but the summaries in the blog article are good. Bob Waldrop, OKC http://ourfiniteworld.com/2012/02/12/three-major-journals-publish-articles-on-limited-world-oil-supply/#more-15251 In the past month, three major peer-reviewed journals have published articles relating to limited world oil supply: 1.. In Science, Technology is Turning U. S. Oil Around But Not the World?s, by Richard A. Kerr; 2.. In Nature, Climate Policy: Oil?s Tipping Point has Passed, by James Murray and David King; and 3.. In Energy, Oil Supply Limits and the Continuing Financial Crisis, by Gail Tverberg. The fact that these articles have been published is significant, because articles in the mainstream press, such as Bloomberg?s recent article, Peak Oil Scare Fades as Shale Deepwater Wells Gush Crude, seem to suggest that our oil problems are past. While the US oil supply situation may be a little better, the world supply situation is still very bad, and oil prices are still very high around the world. Furthermore, high oil prices tend to have a recessionary effect, and can lead to debt defaults. These issues are described in both the second and third articles above. Thus, there is a substantial chance that high oil prices are contributing to the debt default problem in Europe, and to forecast low world economic growth. In this post, I briefly describe these articles. more at the link above [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (1) Recent Activity: a.. This is a basic beginners' backpack in SE Oklahoma. The Horsethief Springs trail is a great place to get a taste of the history of the Ouachita Mountains. Horsethief Springs Trail is one of the most beautiful trails in OK. The trail begins at Cedar Lake and loops through many different tree species -- loblolly pine, sweet gum, dogwood, and many others. The full trail loop is 10+ miles and has an elevation gain and loss of 1050 feet. However, we will "cheat" a little and cut off most of the 5 miles of climb by beginning the hike off Talimina Drive on the Ouachita National Recreation Trail for 1.2 miles before we connect on the second half of the Horsethief Springs loop. So, we will hike a total of only about 7 miles down the northern face of Winding Stair Mountain to Cedar Lake, with a 200 foot elevation gain and about a 1050 foot elevation loss during the hike. We may have to cross a couple of small streams. Portions of this trail are located along some logging roads from the 1920's. The trail follows the route horse thieves used in the late 1800s. They made their camps and corrals near the top of Winding Stair Mountain because of the existence of a perennial spring. The CCC (Civilian Conservations Corps) built a stone structure in the 1930s to contain the spring water and prevent erosion. I have found a jewel in Mark Aldridge, the instructor for this class. His plan is to have 18 students, 3 instructors, and 6-8 Dutch ovens at his place near SW 119th and Council from 10am to noon (ish). We will start the food cooking then watch a power point presentation. Mark will demonstrate how to reclaim the D.O. I ruined with improper storage. Then we get to sample the yummy results of Dutch Oven cooking. The cost will be $15.00 per student. Registration is open now and will close 3/15. Call Diane at (405)229-6147 or e-mail to kimcooperhart at gmail.com register. Other Info * More outings can be found online: http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org * Our January-February-March newsletter is now on-line at http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/cimarron Message from Mike Scharrer * I need to know if there is any interest in a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and possibly into the Canadian Quetico Provincial Park. This trip will not go until late August or early September, but I need to know of the interest in the Cimarron Group, other Sierra Club members, and your friends and relatives -- up to a maximum of eight persons. This will be a 10 day trip. Entrance into the Wilderness Area is restricted to specific entry points and then restricted to a specific number of people and canoes per entry point. I will need to reserve a selected entry point as early as possible because the spots for the best entry fill up quickly. Camping is also on a restricted basis. They want you to camp in only selected spots, to restrict impact to the wilderness. They then move the camp spots every 10 years or so in order to let the camp spots "recover". We will try to canoe across the border into Canada (pretty much anywhere), where we can camp anywhere along the shoreline. I will also need to select an outfitter where we can rent the canoes and special "Duluth" packs, as well as obtain pretty much anything else we might need. I will need to pick a route where there will be as few portages as possible, yet allow us to experience the many rapids and waterfalls throughout the area. Participants will need to be in good enough physical shape to shoulder a canoe then up to two packs at a time, over some steep, rocky and rooted portage trails, with some marshy conditions and possible windblown trees to contend with. The late Summer trip time will allow for warm enough water to swim, yet late enough to see some leaf color changes, ripe blueberries (for the pancakes), mushrooms and reduced mosquito populations! Those of us who want to fish can supplement our meals quite easily! There is good fishing for Northern Pike, Walleye, and Smallmouth Bass, pretty much anywhere. We will be following the same routes as the first trappers and Voyeguers. We will also be stopping on the way to the BWCA to experience the unique scenery of the North Shore of Lake Superior. There are cliffs, waterfalls and an historical lighthouse along the way. There will be a lot of planning involved in a trip like this so it is necessary to consider it as far enough ahead as possible. The best entry point permits go quickly as the permits are on a first contact basis. Participants will need to have at least a medium knowledge and experience with a canoe, working together, since we will run into wind at some point while on the larger lakes that will be inevitable on any BWCA trip. We will be able to enjoy the Bald Eagles and Common Loons, as well as many other northern arboreal and wetland birds and animals. Seeing Moose, Beaver, and Black Bear will be possible, as well as listening to the Wolf calls at night. With all of the solar storms and sun flair activity lately, we will also probably witness the Northern Lights...and no light pollution! We will need to pack for any weather, but it should be a wonderful experience regardless! I encourage anyone interested to InterNet search any of the above keywords for environmental and historical information. The BWCA was one of the first designated in the National Wilderness System. Especially search for maps showing the different lakes, rivers, portages and designated trip routes. EWG Logo Tell the USDA not to cave to industry pressure Dear Shauna, I know you count on EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce when deciding which fruits and vegetables to buy organic and which ones are ok to buy conventional. But EWG counts on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to publish complete, unbiased pesticide data to create our guide. For the last two years, the pesticide lobby, especially a front group called the Alliance for Food and Farming, has waged a multi-front campaign to get the USDA to repackage its pesticide data with industry talking points that downplay risks and consumers' concerns. And they attacked EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce in the bargain. We expect to see USDA's 2010 pesticide data soon and fully expect that the agency has not caved to industry pressure. Giving you the information you need is too important. Your tax dollars paid for the government's pesticide tests. So please stand with EWG today to make sure the USDA tells us the whole truth about pesticides on our food. Click here to tell the USDA not to cave to industry's pressure - you want to know what you're eating. Last year, we launched an investigation into the Alliance for Food and Farming and its efforts to influence the USDA. We learned that: * The Alliance for Food and Farming - which represents the interests of conventional agriculture producers and pesticide companies - received a $180,000 grant from USDA in 2010 to slam "Environmental Working Group's 'dirty dozen' report," and to denounce "[c]laims by activist groups about unsafe levels of pesticides." * One top USDA official even wrote a letter endorsing the use of federal tax dollars to attack EWG. When EWG supporters like you called USDA out for funding the project with your tax money, internal documents obtained by EWG show that some USDA officials tried to do damage control, discussing whether they could rescind the grant or tone down disclosures about the project. * At the same time the Alliance for Food and Farming was preparing to attack EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce, industry representatives were lobbying hard to have USDA change the way it would release pesticide data to include more industry-friendly spin downplaying the risks of pesticide residues. * More than a dozen industry representatives - including members of the Alliance for Food and Farming board of directors who led the campaign against EWG - wrote Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack last year telling him to prevent "environmental activists" from presenting USDA pesticide data in a way that would hurt business. Thanks to you, the Alliance for Food and Farming's government grant was not renewed. You told the USDA that consumers (and taxpayers!) want unbiased pesticide data released. Let's do it again this year. Make sure USDA officials know they can't cave to industry pressure - Americans want to know the truth. Take action today. Scott Martin Capitol: (405) 557-7329 Committee Greenlights 'Gray Water' Legislation OKLAHOMA CITY - Legislation approved by a House committee would encourage the use of private residential "gray water" reuse by creating a permit exemption for gray water systems that use less than 250 gallons of gray water per day. House Bill 2835, by state Rep. Scott Martin, defines gray water as untreated household wastewater that has not come in contact with toilet waste or water from a kitchen sink. The legislation directs the Department of Environmental Quality to exempt private residential gray water reuse systems that meet a series of rules including that they make use of less than 250 gallons of gray water per day. A gray water system would be used for gardening, composting or landscape irrigation. "This legislation is part of the House Republican agenda to improve water conservation in Oklahoma," said Martin (R-Norman). "I believe common sense reuse is good policy and one that is being used in other states in the Southwest. Many parts of Oklahoma have experienced some unique strains on their water systems. Increased demand is often met with rationing or other less desirable results. Inserting minimal reuse into the options people have to manage their personal water use will be of great assistance and makes good sense. On top of that, the average consumer has the potential to realize savings on their monthly water bill through conservation." Gray water systems that would be exempt would have to * provide for overflow into the sewer or on-site wastewater treatment and disposal system; * include cover for any gray water storage tank to avoid the creation of a habitat for mosquitoes and other insects; * be located outside of a floodway and five feet above the groundwater table; * clearly identify gray water pressure piping as a non-potable water conduit; * be used on site and not run off the property; * minimize the potential for contact with people or domestic pets; * minimize standing water and ensure the hydraulic capacity of the soil is not exceeded; * avoid spraying or discharge into a waterway; * be in compliance with municipal or county ordinances; House Bill 2835 passed in the House Agriculture, Wildlife and Environment Committee and now proceeds to the House floor for consideration. -30- NOTICE: The information in this email is confidential, legally privileged, and exempt from disclosure under law. We will have *free food, free non-alcoholic beverages and door prizes*. A cash bar will be available. *Oklahoma Keystone XL Party* Who: Everyone's Invited! Please bring your friends. When: Wednesday, February 29 at 5:30 p.m. Where: Belle Isle Brewery, 50 Penn Place, Oklahoma City With the Senate currently trying to override the will of the administration using legislative loopholes, and Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe leading the charge, it is more important than ever that we stand together in opposition to this pipeline! - Cornell University and numerous independent economists have evaluated the pipeline proposal and assert that the pipeline's supporters are massively inflating their numbers. - The pipeline would put Oklahoma citizens' health and Oklahoma property owners' land at risk to benefit a foreign oil company. - Tar sands oil is the dirtiest oil on earth and this project, if approved, would place our children's future in jeopardy. So, join us as we celebrate the administration's support and stand up to big oil and their many supporters. *Please take a moment to RSVP and let us know you?ll be able to make it! * Thanks for all you do, David Ocamb Chapter Director PS: After you RSVP, please forward this message. You can also share this with your Facebook and Twitter followers: [image: Share this page on Facebook][image: Share this page on Twitter][image: Share this page with other services] *Oklahoma Chapter **Sierra Club *10 NE 10th Street, Suite 202, Oklahoma City, 73146 405.234.5522 Update My Profile| Manage My Email Preferences| Unsubscribe -- Whitney Pearson Associate Organizing Rep Sierra Club, Beyond Coal Oklahoma City, OK (o) 405.286.2277 ext. 223 (c) 405.826.0241 http://www.sierraclub.org/coal/ok/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately, those days will shortly come to an end. The central United States is rapidly drying up and dust bowl conditions will soon return. There are a couple of major reasons for this. Number one, the Ogallala Aquifer is being depleted at an astounding pace. The Ogallala Aquifer is one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the entire world, and water from it currently irrigates more than 15 million acres of crops. When that water is gone we will be in a world of hurt. Secondly, drought conditions have become the "new normal" in many areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and other states in the middle part of the country. Scientists tell us that the wet conditions that we enjoyed for several decades after World War II were actually the exception to the rule and that most of time time the interior west is incredibly dry. They also tell us that when dust bowl conditions return to the area, they might stay with us a lot longer than a decade like they did during the 1930s. Unfortunately, without water you cannot grow food, and with global food supplies as tight as they are right now we cannot afford to have a significant decrease in agricultural production. But it is not just the central United States that is experiencing the early stages of a major water crisis. Already many other areas around the nation are rapidly developing their own water problems. As supplies of fresh water get tighter and tighter, some really tough decisions are going to have to be made. Fresh water is absolutely essential to life, and it is going to become increasingly precious in the years ahead. Most Americans have never even heard of the Ogallala Aquifer, but the truth is that it is one of the most important bodies of water on the globe. It covers well over 100,000 square miles and it sits underneath the states of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota. Water drawn from the Ogallala Aquifer is used to water more than 15 million acres of crops. Without this source of water, the United States would not be the breadbasket of the world. That is why what is happening right now is so alarming. The following are 20 signs that dust bowl conditions will soon return to the heartland of America.... #1 The Ogallala Aquifer is being drained at a rate of approximately 800 gallons per minute. #2 According to the U.S. Geological Survey, since 1940 "a volume equivalent to two-thirds of the water in Lake Erie" has been permanently lost from the Ogallala Aquifer. #3 Decades ago, the Ogallala Aquifer had an average depth of approximately 240 feet, but today the average depth is just 80 feet. In some areas of Texas, the water is gone completely. #4 Scientists are warning that nothing can be done to stop the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer. The ominous words of David Brauer of the Ogallala Research Service should alarm us all.... "Our goal now is to engineer a soft landing. That's all we can do." #5 According to a recent National Geographic article, the average depletion rate of the Ogallala Aquifer is picking up speed.... Even more worrisome, the draining of the High Plains water account has picked up speed. The average annual depletion rate between 2000 and 2007 was more than twice that during the previous fifty years. The depletion is most severe in the southern portion of the aquifer, especially in Texas, where the water table beneath sizeable areas has dropped 100-150 feet; in smaller pockets, it has dropped more than 150 feet. #6 According to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. interior west is now the driest that it has been in 500 years. #7 It seems like the middle part of the United States experiences a major drought almost every single year now. Last year, "the drought of 2011" virtually brought Texas agriculture to a standstill. More than 80 percent of the state of Texas experienced "exceptional drought" conditions at some point, and it was estimated that about 30 percent of the wheat fields in Texas were lost. Agricultural losses from the drought were estimated to be $3 billion in the state of Texas alone. #8 Wildfires have burned millions of acres of vegetation in the central part of the United States in recent years. For example, wildfires burned an astounding 3.6 million acres in the state of Texas alone during 2011. This helps set the stage for huge dust storms in the future. #9 Texas is not the only state that has been experiencing extremely dry conditions. Oklahoma only got about 30 percent of the rainfall that it normally gets last summer. #10 In some areas of the southwest United States we are already seeing huge dust storms come rolling through major cities. You can view video of a giant dust storm rolling through Phoenix, Arizona right here. #11 Unfortunately, scientists tell us that it would be normal for dust bowl conditions to persist in parts of North America for decades. The following is from an article in the Vancouver Sun.... But University of Regina paleoclimatologist Jeannine-Marie St. Jacques says that decade-long drought is nowhere near as bad as it can get. St. Jacques and her colleagues have been studying tree ring data and, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Vancouver over the weekend, she explained the reality of droughts. "What we're seeing in the climate records is these megadroughts, and they don't last a decade?they last 20 years, 30 years, maybe 60 years, and they'll be semi-continental in expanse," she told the Regina Leader-Post by phone from Vancouver. "So it's like what we saw in the Dirty Thirties, but imagine the Dirty Thirties going on for 30 years. That's what scares those of us who are in the community studying this data pool." #12 Experts tell us that U.S. water bills are likely to soar in the coming years. It is being projected that repairing and expanding our decaying drinking water infrastructure will cost more than one trillion dollars over the next 25 years, and as a result our water bills will likely approximately triple over that time period. #13 Right now, the United States uses approximately 148 trillion gallons of fresh water a year, and there is no way that is sustainable in the long run. #14 According to a U.S. government report, 36 states are already facing water shortages or will be facing water shortages within the next few years. #15 Lake Mead supplies about 85 percent of the water to Las Vegas, and since 1998 the level of water in Lake Mead has dropped by about 5.6 trillion gallons. #16 A federal judge has ruled that the state of Georgia has very few legal rights to Lake Lanier, and since Lake Lanier is the main water source for the city of Atlanta that presents quite a problem. #17 It has been estimated that the state of California only has a 20 year supply of fresh water left. #18 It has been estimated that the state of New Mexico only has a 10 year supply of fresh water left. #19 Approximately 40 percent of all rivers in the United States and approximately 46 percent of all lakes in the United States have become so polluted that they are are no longer fit for human use. #20 Eight states in the Great Lakes region have signed a pact banning the export of water from the Great Lakes to outsiders - even to other U.S. states. Unfortunately, it is not just the United States that is facing a shortage of fresh water in the near future. The reality is that most of the rest of the world is in far worse shape than we are. Just consider the following stats.... -According to the United Nations, the world is going to need at least 30 percent more fresh water by the year 2030. -Global demand for fresh water tripled during the last century, and is now increasing faster than ever before. -According to USAID, one-third of the people on earth will be facing severe or chronic water shortages by the year 2025. -Of the 60 million people added to the cities of the world each year, the vast majority of them live in deeply impoverished areas that have no sanitation facilities whatsoever. -It has been estimated that 75 percent of all surface water in India has been heavily contaminated by human or agricultural waste. -Sadly, according to one UN study on sanitation, far more people in India have access to a cell phone than to a toilet. -Every 8 seconds, somewhere in the world a child dies from drinking dirty water. -Due to a lack of water, Saudi Arabia has given up on trying to grow wheat and will be 100 percent dependent on wheat imports by the year 2016. -Each year in northern China, the water table drops by an average of about one meter due to severe drought and overpumping, and the size of the desert increases by an area equivalent to the state of Rhode Island. -In China, 80 percent of the major rivers have become so horribly polluted that they do not support any aquatic life at all at this point. -In sub-Saharan Africa, drought has become a way of life. Collectively, the women of South Africa walk the equivalent of the distance to the moon and back 16 times a day just to get water. It has been said that "water is the new gold", and unfortunately we are getting close to a time when that may actually be true. Without water, none of us could survive for long. Just try not using water for anything for 12 hours some time. It is a lot harder than you may think. We can't grow our food in a pile of dust. Unfortunately, many areas of the heartland of America are slowly but surely heading in that direction. History tells us that it is only a matter of time before dust bowl conditions return to the central United States. We have used irrigation and other technologies to delay the inevitable, but in the end it cannot be stopped. Let us hope that the return of dust bowl conditions can be put off for as long as possible, but let us also prepare diligently for the worst. For complete information see http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/outings or contact leader Van Barker at 405-377-6256 or vanbarker01 at yahoo.com * March 31 - Dutch Oven Cooking ** Moved to April 21st ** April * April 1 - 9:00-5:00 - Outing leader training - Interested in leading outings for the local group or chapter of the Sierra Club? The Northern half of the trail is a fairly level walk through pine forest. The Southern half has a couple of 300-foot climbs through hardwood forest with many excellent views of Lake Carlton. On Saturday our backpack will begin at the Robber's Cave Trailhead around noon. After checking out Robbers Cave, it's on to our camp on the Northwest shore of Wayne Wallace Reservoir 3 1/2 miles away. Along the way we'll pass by Lost Lake and Cattail Pond. After an initial steep, rocky climb, the trail levels out and is smoother. We should make camp early enough to do a little exploring before supper. On Sunday after breakfast, we'll break camp and head up to some of the best views an Oklahoma State Park has to offer. It's 4 1/2 miles to the trailhead at the Lake Carlton low water dam and some of the climbs are fairly steep. We'll lunch on the bluffs overlooking the lake, then make our way to the trailhead. Our backpack should end around 2:00 PM. Leaders: Tom Libby - tomlibby at yahoo.com and Richard Coker - richard5823 at sbcglobal.net Other Info * More outings can be found online: http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org * Our January-February-March newsletter is now on-line at http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/cimarron Message from Mike Scharrer * I need to know if there is any interest in a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and possibly into the Canadian Quetico Provincial Park. "Google-up" A.J. and Why Not blues band to get some You-Tube clips. (Make sure to skip to the middle of the Jazz Lab clip, in order to get the full band performing.) I've seen this band several times and it was great each time! The guitar player is the full-time Edmond Director of Water Resources. The sax player, you can see, sometimes blows two different saxophones at the same time, for a great sound! The lead singer also plays the congas. There is also the keyboard, as well as bass and drums. The Jazz Lab is such a great venue and worth every $$ whenever you can attend, and all local artists - some from the UCO music Department. It is located in Edmond just south of Stephenson Park and downtown Edmond, east of the Bryant Ave. and 4th Street intersection. The Stage is in a traditional surrounded Shakespearian form, with a balcony with great views throughout. (Fantastic acoustics.) This is a follow-up class to the "Solar Battery Building" class held last August. David Nordahl, certified solar installer for EnergyWise Systems, will be the instructor for this class. Registration cost is $30.00. The purpose of this first announcement is to determine who may wish to purchase supplies to build their own solar collector and battery which can be assembled with the instructor's help during the class. If you do not wish to purchase supplies, you may come and learn anyway. But, if you wish to purchase supplies, you must notify Kim Cooper-Hart by e-mail kimcooperhart at gmail.com asap so that the supplies can be ordered. Cost for everything you will need to assemble your own unit are: * 1) Smaller system (40-45W 12V solar panel): $334 + tax + shipping + optional panel mounts * 2) Larger system (40-100W 12V solar panel): $564 + tax + shipping + optional panel mounts * If you wish to sign up for the class (with or without supplies), please e-mail Kim. For complete information see http://oklahoma.sierraclub.org/outings or contact leader Van Barker at 405-377-6256 or vanbarker01 at yahoo.com * March 31 - Dutch Oven Cooking ** Moved to April 21st ** Postponed from August due to the fire ban! On top of that, the average consumer has the potential to realize savings on their monthly water bill through conservation." We will have *free food, free non-alcoholic beverages and door prizes*.
