OU College of Engineering's Civil Engineering and Environmental Science
department and the Water Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER)
Center, Presents Seminar on Clean Water Research

Persons interested in learning more about clean water research in
developing countries are invited to hear Kara Nelson, associate
professor of civil environmental engineering at the University of
California-Berkeley, present research on reducing waterborne diseases in
India and Bolivia. The presentation is set from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 27, in room A-235 of Sarkeys Energy Center on the
University of Oklahoma Norman campus. The event is free to the public.

Nelson's presentation, "Reducing Pathogen Risks in Drinking Water in the
Developing World From the Household to the City Scale," focuses on
reducing the threat of waterborne disease in developing countries
through simple water treatment processes and improved engineering
infrastructure. According to the U.S. Department of State, one out of
every eight people globally lacks safe drinking water and more children
die each year due to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and poor
hygiene than AIDS and malaria.

Nelson's research program addresses critical issues at the intersection
of public health and the environment, with a focus on reducing the
threat posed by waterborne pathogens by developing simple water
treatment processes and improving the engineering infrastructure in
developing countries.

The presentation is sponsored by OU College of Engineering's Civil
Engineering and Environmental Science department and the Water
Technologies for Emerging Regions (WaTER) Center.
