In celebration of Earth Day, citizens will be banding together as part of Keep
Oklahoma Beautiful’s (KOB) Great American
Clean-Up<http://www.keepoklahomabeautiful.com/great-american-cleanup>,
OKC Beautiful’s Litter Blitz<http://www.okcbeautiful.com/programs/litterblitz>,
OK Dept. of Transportation’s
Trash-Off<http://www.keepoklahomabeautiful.com/odot-trash-off>,
and American Rivers’ National River
Clean-Up<http://www.americanrivers.org/our-work/restoring-rivers/national-river-cleanup/>
to
clean-up *Lake Overholser and the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge* on Saturday,
April 21st. Because a large portion of Oklahoma City gets its drinking
water from water that has gone through the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge to
Lake Overholser (or to Lake Hefner via the canal), it is important to keep
these areas clean. Clean water is healthier water so everybody is invited
to help us clean the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge and Lake Overholser.****

Volunteers will meet at 8:30am at the Overholser Pavilion which is located
around NW 14th and East Overholser Drive in Oklahoma City (35o 29’ 00” N; 97
o 39’ 51.3” W). This clean-up has been made possible with financial support
from Chesapeake Energy, KOB/OG&E Growth Grant, Oklahoma Clean Lakes &
Watersheds Association (OCLWA) <http://www.oclwa.org/index.php>, and the
DEQ Green Team.  This clean-up also receives in-kind donations from OKC
Kayaks <http://www.okckayak.com/> who will once again be donating use of
their kayaks for the flotilla to clean the waterways in Overholser &
Stinchcomb, the City of Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Department of
Environmental Quality, and Pepsi Bottling Group. To clean-up via kayak,
volunteers need to contact Rodney Boegel at rodneyboegel at att.net or
405-802-3678. ****

If people want to participate in this fun event, either e-mail Karen Miles
at Karen.Miles at deq.ok.gov or call her at 405-702-8192 so that there will be
enough food and supplies.  After the clean-up, there will be a free lunch
courtesy of Earl’s Rib Palace, Jersey Mike’s, and the Cimarron Steak House.
 There will also be a drawing for free prizes during lunch.  Volunteers
should wear sturdy shoes, hat, sturdy gloves, insect repellant, and
sunscreen. The clean-up will be held whether rain or shine.  We hope you
choose to join us and help us rid Lake Overholser and the Stinchcomb
Wildlife Refuge of trash and restore these areas to their natural beauty!  *
