Todd Stephens, sustainable architect for Matrix A&E and our OSN Treasurer is mentioned in the below article from the American Institute of Architects regarding their Committee on the Environment Eastern Oklahoma Chapter. In addition to serving on the OSN board of directors, Todd also co-chairs the AIA-COTE based in Tulsa.

As many of you know last October '05 COTE partnered with Sustainable Tulsa for the Millenium House showcasing. It was a wonderfully attended event that highlighted an energy-efficient home built by Neighbor for Neighbor's Don McCarthy. To show our appreciation to Mr. McCarthy for a lifetime of work in sustainability, OSN and AIA successfully nominated Don's Millenium House project for the "Green Award in Sustainability" from Oklahoma State University's Environmental Institute!

Collaborations like this can really help make a difference! Way to go Network.

In January 2005, AIA Eastern Oklahoma (EOC) organized a COTE at the request of Todd M. Stephens, Assoc. AIA. Today, AIA EOC’s COTE is co-chaired by Todd Stephens and Molly Jones, AIA.

At the outset, they recognized that inviting non-AIA member participation would provide the COTE with an enhanced body of knowledge on environmental and energy-related issues, as well as establish alliances with other environmental organizations. Along with representatives of Sustainable Tulsa, a chapter of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network, and the Metropolitan Environmental Trust (MET) and individuals who possessed specialized knowledge, the committee determined that their mission statement was to promote sustainability by advancing environmental knowledge and values, and advocate responsible design, building, and community planning practices to the profession, industry, and the
public.

In November 2005, an event motivated the COTE to focus its attention on a public outreach initiative. More than 800 people toured the Millennium House, a prototypical home that incorporates superior energy efficiency, disaster-resistance construction, and a healthy indoor environment. Combined with the home’s ICF construction, the cost of the geothermal heating and cooling cost averages $20/month. The overwhelming numbers of people touring the Millennium House indicated that the home’s design, construction, and technologies had a broad appeal to the public at large.

Determined to assist the public in learning more about energy-related design decisions, COTE organized Go!Green: Home Edition, an afternoon workshop held on Saturday, March 18, 2006. Sponsored by AIA Eastern Oklahoma
in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma Urban Design Studio, OU Center for Studies in Democracy and Culture, Sustainable Tulsa, M.E.T., and Ridgway’s, the seminar was free and open to the public. The focus of the workshop was residential energy-efficient applications with sessions addressing solar power, zero energy living, energy efficient strategies, home maintenance, financial incentives for energy efficiency, and how to select a sustainable architect and/or contractor.

Attended by approximately 175 people, the Go!Green workshop was determined a success based on its attendance and evaluation responses. While the evaluations were overwhelmingly favorable, constructive criticism was accepted with a smile as the complaints were that attendees wanted expanded program depth and breadth. That being the case, there’s no doubt that Go!Green: Home Edition will evolve into an
annual event.

Every Go!Green participant is indebted to its chair, Molly Jones, AIA, for her extraordinary efforts in leading our profession’s involvement in energy-related issues and promoting the role of the architect in advocating conservation of our limited resources. We share her belief that our community is poised to embrace the habits and applications that will ensure a healthy, safe environment for generations to come.
