To the Editor

On Tuesday May 6th, 2008, someone stole the tractor and implements from the Urban Harvest Program of the Regional Food Bank.

In terms of tractors it was a fairly small garden tractor. In terms of the impact on the community it was as big as an aircraft carrier.

Many community gardens depend on the generosity of the Food Bank and talents of Bruce Edwards, the Urban Harvest Director, to prepare their land each year to grow food for those suffering from chronic food insecurity, The citizens of Noble recently dedicated their new community garden. It may not have been possible without the aid of the Food Bank tractor.

The Urban Harvest program is dependent upon donations and grants for funding. Like most charitable programs, the cost of replacing a vital piece of equipment is often out of the current budget and may not be possible to replace for several budget cycles, if at all.

Fresh produce is unquestionably the healthiest component of the daily diet and the hardest to replace. The produce from the gardens at the Food Bank was dedicated to their Senior Feeding Program. For these members of our community the loss is immense.

Whoever the thief or thieves are, I hope you understand that your greed contributed to an early death for some and poorer health for many.
