have come to realize that to make sustainable living central to life, is
to live richly. In November alone, our lives were enriched by visits from
a group from Tulsa as they came to share long-running friendships and
celebrate life's passages; another group from Tulsa came for discussions
in their on-going commitment to help their community in its comprehensive
efforts to sustainable practices; a group from the Oklahoma City area
held their yoga retreat here (who would have thought the weather would be
warm enough to do yoga on the patio in November!?) and a few days later
the United Methodist clergy on a spiritual renewal retreat were warmed by
the fire in the fireplace (the days had grown chilly) as well as their
liturgies, silences and sharings. We were delighted to introduce some
sustainable practices to an overnight guest, who was especially open to
making more sustainable choices in her life.<br>
<br>
We were enriched by our visits to our own local school in Billings, where
elementary students have caught the composting bug and to the Peace
House's Peace Festival in Oklahoma City where we had wonderful
conversations with so many people interested in both sustainability and
spirituality.<br>
<br>
Too, our own knowledge and awareness grew this month as Ann began her
studies with the Master Gardener's program and Pat attended another
Master Naturalist training. Our monthly Oklahoma Conservation Commission
Blue Thumb creek monitoring of Doe Creek, which meanders through the
farm, was especially enjoyable this month as the trees had lost their
leaves and the beaver dam was easier to see and a quietness had fallen
over the creek.<br>
<br>
We refurbished a pen at the barn and moved the chickens into it from
their movable pen in the garden so they'd be warmer and safe from
raccoons this winter, helped a guest build his own turnable composter,
picked the last of the green tomatoes (and made more eggplant parmesan
with them, which never seems to make it to the freezer) and planted seven
fruit trees. We're enjoying serving fresh greens to our guests from our
fall garden and the winter garden in the greenhouse.<br>
<br>
<u>Perhaps most exciting of all</u> is the scheduling of our first
Strawbale Construction Workshop next June. Working with </span></b><b><span

we're going to build a hermitage with walls made of the clay off the farm
and the straw bales from last year's wheat harvest. It will be a
community experience as well as an educational workshop. Look for details
below. More information will be available in January. But we wanted to
give a heads-up to those who've told us they're interested in being part
of this experience.<br>
<br>
As the winter comes (we think - who remembers such a long, warm autumn as
this?) and we celebrate during the holidays, we look forward to time with
our families, friends and neighbors, time in the quiet of the prairie
during the fallow season, time watching birds and feeding animals. We
have scheduled one retreat for December, which we think fits well with
the season and helps prepare for a more sustainable new year: Learning
How to Keep Sabbath, (details are below.) We think it's a helpful
practice to return to in this consumeristic, multi-tasking,
constantly-communicating culture. Our January schedule of retreats is
also listed below. Also feel free to call us if you, your family or
friends want to schedule a day or few in the beauty of the prairie in
winter. <br>

Not only educational about natural building methods, this workshop will

plus time in God's good creation. That pattern is kept the second day and
the retreat ends with the Eucharist in mid-afternoon. It's a lovely
