City offers free community gardening presentation

Metro-area residents are invited to a free presentation named "Growing More than Food: Social, Political and Educational Opportunities of Community Gardening," from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 15 at OSU-OKC's Agricultural Resource Center, 400 N Portland.

The class will detail the success of Toledo GROWs, a community gardening outreach program from Toledo Botanical Gardens in Toledo, Ohio. Toledo GROWs horticulturalist Matthew Ross will give the presentation.

"This is a valuable opportunity to learn from the success of a program in a peer city," said Jennifer Gooden, Director of the Oklahoma City's Office of Sustainability. "Community gardens create safe and healthy recreational activities in our local neighborhoods."

Toledo GROWs is a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to the continued growth of community-based gardens throughout northwest Ohio. The organization offers resources and technical assistance to support the development of sustainable garden projects to serve people of diverse ages and abilities.

"I hope that I can help spark ideas that will enhance the current community gardening efforts within Oklahoma City," Ross said.

The presentation is sponsored by the City of Oklahoma City's Office of Sustainability and OSU-OKC School of Engineering Technology. Funding was made available through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.
