well as the USDA Farmer's Market.
North America has over 4,400 described species of native bees that
pollinate wildflowers and crops. From the tiny Perdita minima to the
substantial carpenter bee, these local pollinators are hard at work in
the floral landscapes of gardens, farms, forests, grasslands and urban
and wild lands. Unfortunately, several species of native bees are
showing disturbing signs of decline. Learn more about colorful
pollinators and how you can support them at U.S. Department of
Agriculture's 2011 National Pollinator Week Celebration.
The People's Garden Initiative is a nationwide effort which was started
by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in 2009. The initiative challenges
all USDA employees to start People's Gardens at USDA facilities or help
communities create gardens. People's Gardens bring together people -
young, old and from all ethnicities and all walks of life - who seek
ways, big and small, to improve their community and the environment.
