The Bokoshe field trip is shaping up to be a great opportunity to learn
about the history of activism in Oklahoma by people who made it. Attending
will be some of Oklahoma's most notable practitioners of citizenship
(derogatorily called "activists" by some). Earl Hatley from Vinita is a
traditional Cherokee, the Grand River Keeper, and director of the LEED
Agency. Bob Rounsavell from Oolagah is the President of the Carrie Dickerson
Foundation. Herb Beattie from Tulsa is the former director of the Oklahoma
Nature Conservancy. Paul Muegge from Tonkawa, is a former member of the
Oklahoma Senate and author of the laws to control pollution from CAFOs. For
this work Muegge received the JFK Profiles in Courage award. This group
brings perspectives that include the practice of civic responsibility
relating to Black Fox nuclear plant (1970's), Tar Creek Superfund Site
(1980's through the present), poultry and hog industry pollution (1990s'
through the present), and four proposed - but defeated -- coal burning power
plants (2000s), and Bokoshe (2010s).
