Subject: Earth Day: How to Feed our Mother
Happy Earth Day!
Attached is a portrait of Mother Earth Lade Bare, by Alexandre Hogue, an
Oklahoma artist. It says it all! The good news is there is still time to
heal our mother!
When I was at Oklahoma Science Fest at the Zoo, I asked 5,000 4th and 5th
graders if you could kill dirt. 90% of them said no.
When I showed the children the photo of my thriving Green bean plants, and
then the withered plants 2 days after I poured oil on one plant and salt on
another, they got it-dirt is a living organism that can be killed.
My question to them-"If we kill our dirt how will we grow our food." We are
planting seed thoughts in youth's minds.
Kids understand recycling. Now it's time to understand how we can grow our
soil and feed our dirt. Recycle our earth! Compost is Black Gold we can all
create at home to feed our soil. Attached to this email is basic composting
instructions. You too can grow your dirt and feed your soil!! Feed our
mother.
Sobering thought: If you took the peel from 1/32 of an apple, that is the
amount of soil available on earth to grow our food!! It is our most valuable
treasure.
PBS OETA-TV is showing "Dirt" again on Thursday April 22 at 2 a.m. Kind of
early in the morning but perhaps you can tape it and watch it later.
Happy Earth Day!!
